We’ll still be using this blog, but we created a Tumblr for reblogability (new favorite word) and to give more people a chance to see what we’re up to. So follow us for videos of our favorite spoken word performances, updates on events, and poetry memes (because yes, such a thing does exist!).

Drag Poetry Night

Speak for Yourself and the Center for Gender, Sexuality, & Activism come together to bring you Drag Poetry Night on October 26th at 8:00 pm in the GSU Conference Auditorium (775 Comm Ave, 2nd floor).

We’d like to offer performance groups and individuals an opportunity to perform as genders other than their own through poetry, music, dance, improv, etc. in order to explore what we allow ourselves to do when dressed as another gender and what exactly that means for the performing arts community. The proceeds of the event will benefit Boston Alliance of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, & Transgender Youth.

The night will have set performances by our improv and theater groups, Liquid Fun, Stage Troupe, and BU On Broadway as well as an open mic section for all kinds of performances. If you’d like to perform, sign up at the event or contact us at youspeakforyourself@gmail.com. (Please contact us beforehand if you’d like any special equipment.)

Liquid Fun will be doing a set in dressed in drag, a great way to warm up for their Halloween Show in BU Central the next night, October 27th.

Stage Troupe will be performing a scene from their upcoming production of Stop Kiss, a touching story about an LGBTQ relationship, going up the next weekend, November 1st – 3rd in the Student Theater at Agganis Arena.

BU On Broadway will be giving us some retro drag, performing the song “A Little Less Conversation” from their production of All Shook Up!, coming November 8th – 10th at 8:00 pm to Tsai Performance Center.

Tickets are $7 or $5 with your BU ID, on sale in the GSU Link October 24th – 26th or at the door.

Welcome to the Cave of Wonders

Seasoned Speakees, we’re glad to have you back. And for those of you who are discovering us for the first time, welcome the first day of the rest of your lives. (We’re not actually that pretentious, we promise.)

Hopefully you all had magical summers that inspired some lovely/beautiful/tragic poetry, but if not, have no fear! We’re planning poetry prompts and activities throughout the semester to spark your creativity. Our first meeting will be on Tuesday, September 11th at 7:30 p.m in GSU 315.  Be sure to RSVP on our Facebook event.

In the meantime, stalk add us on Facebook, sharpen your pencils, and try not to get lost in the depths of Allston before our poetic jubilation.

NovemBAM

Speakees & Groupies:

We would like to thank you all for coming out to the show last night to see Rachel McKibbens & Mindy Netiffee throw down in a “literary bitch slap.” We hope that you enjoyed the show us much as we did, whether it was Mindy talking about Psalty the Bible or Rachel reflecting on her Last Love. We can’t say thank you enough to Mindy & Rachel for bringing an unquantifiable amount of soul and rawness to the stage. Also, I hope you all enjoyed your sexy e-board who threw down and opened up the show with some mind-blowing performances. Steph Braman’s Turnstyle, Jay Schwartz’s Liberace Paper Dolls, and Paul Black’s Firefly were brilliant examples of what your e-board has to offer.

DON’T WORRY THERE ARE MORE SPEAK EVENTS TO COME!

There are many opportunities in the next six weeks for you see your lovely e-board.

We are rolling out our NovembAM Slam Season this Monday, November 7th.

What is NovemBAM?

Instead of having an open mic the first Tuesday of every month, during November we will be having a series of slams to solidify a qualifying team for the collegiate national poetry competitions – CUPSI. Every Monday in November and into the first two weeks of December we will have Monday Night Slams at BU Central starting around 8 pm. Do you still love the Open Mic and wish it were still around? Don’t fear, it is! The beginning of every slam will begin with a condensed Open Mic for all of you people that love Spoken Word.

Tell me more!!

Do you wish you could see Speak for Yourself perform in a showcase this semester? In addition to our end of the year showcase, we will be having a poetry showcase at the South Campus Residence Hall Recreational Room on November 17th. Time and theme TBA. Just. Get. Ready.

Below are some videos from past performances and you can find more under our videos tab!

Here is What You Missed!

Last night was the general meeting and if you weren’t there…boy are you unlucky!!! Not only was the poetry sexy, mysterious, and self-deprecating, but you missed all the great events that are coming up in the next MONTH! That’s right, a month of poetry so steamy…

so raunchy…

so confusing…

you will leave the next general meeting a hot mess with no particular direction.

In addition to a significant amount of “wifing-up” that is going on, the e-board has been busy making November more than an awkward month between when you get to dressed up like a naughty chipmunk and Christmas, because, let’s be honest, who really celebrates mid-November imperialism these days?

ANYWHO! I bet you are dying to know what is happening! If you skipped past all those pathetic jokes because you are too busy for playfulness, I understand. We can’t all have personalities.

After having recurrent dreams about the zombie apocalypse, the e-board decided to listen to our premonitions and plan a month of poetry you wouldn’t forget when the zombies were chomping on your neck:

Today – Wednesday, October 26th – Street Show on the steps of Tsai Performance Center (11:50, 12:50, and 1:50)

Friday, October 28th – GSU Main Stage Fiasco … 1 pm – watch out, we’re coming for you via lyrical ‘suasion.

OMG TWO THINGS ON FRIDAY:

Street performance at 9 pm in front of the Rich, Sleeper, and Claflin. OH YA…West Campus!

If you didn’t know that we have a show coming up, it’s time to put the books down and keep reading about the crazy-awesomeness that is happening next week!

p.s. if you have any desire to sell tickets for our show or participate at the table in the GSU Link next week, please email us at youspeakforyourself@gmail.com
