NovemBAM

Speakees & Groupies:

We would like to thank you all for coming out to the show last night to see Rachel McKibbens & Mindy Netiffee throw down in a “literary bitch slap.” We hope that you enjoyed the show us much as we did, whether it was Mindy talking about Psalty the Bible or Rachel reflecting on her Last Love. We can’t say thank you enough to Mindy & Rachel for bringing an unquantifiable amount of soul and rawness to the stage. Also, I hope you all enjoyed your sexy e-board who threw down and opened up the show with some mind-blowing performances. Steph Braman’s Turnstyle, Jay Schwartz’s Liberace Paper Dolls, and Paul Black’s Firefly were brilliant examples of what your e-board has to offer.

DON’T WORRY THERE ARE MORE SPEAK EVENTS TO COME!

There are many opportunities in the next six weeks for you see your lovely e-board.

We are rolling out our NovembAM Slam Season this Monday, November 7th.

What is NovemBAM?

Instead of having an open mic the first Tuesday of every month, during November we will be having a series of slams to solidify a qualifying team for the collegiate national poetry competitions – CUPSI. Every Monday in November and into the first two weeks of December we will have Monday Night Slams at BU Central starting around 8 pm. Do you still love the Open Mic and wish it were still around? Don’t fear, it is! The beginning of every slam will begin with a condensed Open Mic for all of you people that love Spoken Word.

Tell me more!!

Do you wish you could see Speak for Yourself perform in a showcase this semester? In addition to our end of the year showcase, we will be having a poetry showcase at the South Campus Residence Hall Recreational Room on November 17th. Time and theme TBA. Just. Get. Ready.

Below are some videos from past performances and you can find more under our videos tab!

Speak Love,

Your Quirky E-board

Here is What You Missed!

Last night was the general meeting and if you weren’t there…boy are you unlucky!!! Not only was the poetry sexy, mysterious, and self-deprecating, but you missed all the great events that are coming up in the next MONTH! That’s right, a month of poetry so steamy…

so raunchy…

so confusing…

you will leave the next general meeting a hot mess with no particular direction.

In addition to a significant amount of “wifing-up” that is going on, the e-board has been busy making November more than an awkward month between when you get to dressed up like a naughty chipmunk and Christmas, because, let’s be honest, who really celebrates mid-November imperialism these days?

ANYWHO! I bet you are dying to know what is happening! If you skipped past all those pathetic jokes because you are too busy for playfulness, I understand. We can’t all have personalities.

After having recurrent dreams about the zombie apocalypse, the e-board decided to listen to our premonitions and plan a month of poetry you wouldn’t forget when the zombies were chomping on your neck:

Today – Wednesday, October 26th – Street Show on the steps of Tsai Performance Center (11:50, 12:50, and 1:50)

Friday, October 28th – GSU Main Stage Fiasco … 1 pm – watch out, we’re coming for you via lyrical ‘suasion.

OMG TWO THINGS ON FRIDAY:

Street performance at 9 pm in front of the Rich, Sleeper, and Claflin. OH YA…West Campus!

If you didn’t know that we have a show coming up, it’s time to put the books down and keep reading about the crazy-awesomeness that is happening next week!

p.s. if you have any desire to sell tickets for our show or participate at the table in the GSU Link next week, please email us at youspeakforyourself@gmail.com

Speak Love,

Your Sassy E-Board.

The Last Nerve

Boston University’s premiere spoken word poetry group, Speak for Yourself, has done it again! Are you ready for so much magic that you’ll bleed rainbows and have to transfer to Hogwarts? Well, worry not, because Speak is here to bring you all the magic in the world. On November 3rd at 8:00 PM in Photonics 206 Rachel Mckibbens and Mindy Nettifee will bring you the kind of power packed, hard hitting poetry that will make you wonder how you managed all of these years without it. Tickets to this show are $7 general admissions and $5 with a BU I.D. Doors will be open at 8:00.

Now, in the event that you have not yet been graced with the knowledge of Rachel Mckibbens or Mindy Nettifee and their beautiful words, there are a few things you ought to know:

Rachel Mckibbens earned the title slam champion in the 2009 Women of the World poetry slam, competed on teams in the National Poetry Slam nine times, and made it to the National Poetry Slam finals three times. She teaches poetry and creative writing around the country and is currently working on a memoir. You can find her poetry in numerous journals and anthologies including The Acentos Review, London Magazine, The American Poetry Journal, 580 Split, The Nervous Breakdown, and World Literature today. She has also appeared on HBOs TV show Def Poetry. Her favorite kind of tea is English Breakfast with two scoops of sugar and a dash of milk.

Mindy Nettifee is partial to Earl Grey and always keeps a stash of local honey on hand. Always. She is a Pushcart Prize nominated write and accomplished performance poet. She has competed in five National Poetry Slams, toured hundreds of venues, and opened for both Cold War Kids and Meiko. She is the author of Sleepyhead Assassins and Rise of the Trust Fall. She is the executive director of the nonprofit organization Write Now Poetry Society, a group that seeks to increase the audience of great poetry through education, performance, publishing, and grant-making.
